Once neglected and unloved, the humble laundry is fast becoming an "it" factor in homes and an attractive selling point. Here are the latest trends.

For many years the hardworking laundry has been the ugly duckling of pretty much every home. However, the dark, pokey spaces of yesteryear are now being made over everywhere, with “glam laundries” now the ultimate icing on the home owner’s cake.

“People are getting really creative with interiors these days, with a lot of thought going into every space, no matter how small,” says State Custodians’ general manager Joanna Pretty. “If you put a little effort into brightening up this space, it can actually turn into a unique selling point, adding more value to your home.”

If you don’t have a lot of cash to spare, then you can still make a mountain of difference to your laundry by undertaking simple changes like decluttering, installing shelves or adding a new lick of paint. Consider these ideas for inspiration:

Get space savvy

  • Any laundry time should be fuss-free, so zone storage around your activities, including enough space for folding linen, dumping dirty clothes and wrangling washing baskets. If you can, include separate pull-out hampers for whites and colours. If you don’t have room for a separate folding area, create a simple stacked wood countertop sitting across your washer and dryer, or buy an inexpensive wooden slatted bathmat to sit across your tub.

Add some glam

  • Just because it’s the place where you sort your dirty socks doesn’t mean a laundry can’t be a sophisticated space! Even more so if it’s an area that people walk through to get to the backyard. Have a bit of fun and install a marble bench top or stylish wood grain for a splash of luxury. For the splash back consider a metallic panel, mosaics or pretty tiles. Cabinets don’t need to be boring either – go for glass-fronted, or brightly-coloured options. If you go for a laminate benchtop you might want to keep the colour the same as the cupboards — it allows the space to reflect more like a piece of furniture.

Dress it up

  • We take a lot of time to choose artworks and attractive knickknacks for other rooms, so why not the laundry too? A nice painting, pot plants and attractive tins can lift the area from ho hum to happy.

Install a ceiling rod

  • Instead of draping wet clothes over chairs when it rains, include space for fold-away drying racks or a ceiling-mounted hanging rod to increase functionality.

Hide the ironing board

  • If possible, devise an area inside cabinets to store your ironing board neatly, so it's not using up valuable floor space. The back of the laundry door can also be fitted with hooks to hang ironing boards and cleaning accessories.

Make it bright

  • Dark paint colors can quickly make a small laundry room feel depressing. A white background and white fixtures will signifying cleanliness whilst amplifying and reflecting natural light. Grey is a popular colour choice for laundries at present.

Add a splash of colour

  • If all white seems a bit too sterile, add an accent colour – such as an orange shelf - that reflects other accent colours of the house. Also use the same finishes on doors and handles that you’ve used elsewhere which will help make a natural transition from other rooms.

Do double duty

  • Laundries are often used additionally as storage areas or places for pets to sleep and eat so create separate zones for these purposes. De-clutter as much as possible so this area does not become overwhelmed. See if any extra stuff can better be stored in a shed.

Use every nook

  • Adjustable, smart looking open shelving is great for easy access and helps to maximise overhead space. Also, don’t waste blank walls – install hooks to house all your odds and ends such as brooms, dog leads and buckets.
